Subodha - Accessibility-First LMS for Visually Impaired Learners

Subodha is an accessibility-first Learning Management System built for students with partial and complete visual impairments. Developed for Vision Empower, the platform redefines digital learning by prioritizing non-visual navigation, audio-driven interaction, and assistive technology compatibility. Designed for multi-region deployment across India, Subodha combines inclusive pedagogy with scalable Open edX architecture—ensuring independent, multilingual learning for visually impaired students and educators.

Accessibility-First Learning Management System
Focus:
Inclusive STEM Education for K–10 Learners

01

Challenge

Traditional LMS platforms are built primarily for sighted users, making them difficult or unusable for learners with visual impairments. The challenge is especially severe in STEM subjects, where understanding relies heavily on diagrams, structured content, and sequential logic. Vision Empower required a platform that did not retrofit accessibility as an add-on, but embedded it at the core—supporting independent learning, multilingual flexibility, and seamless integration with assistive technologies.

02

Objective

The goal was to design an accessibility-first LMS that enables visually impaired K–10 learners to independently explore STEM concepts. The platform needed to support keyboard-only navigation, screen reader compatibility, multilingual delivery, structured content discovery, and scalable deployment across Indian states and curricula.

03

Solution

ManpraX developed Subodha as a deeply customized Open edX platform re-engineered for non-visual interaction models. The LMS prioritizes audio-first learning, keyboard-driven navigation, and cognitive clarity in interaction patterns—ensuring usability for partially and fully visually impaired learners. The system supports hierarchical content structuring (Subject → Tag → Programme) and multi-role access for students and teachers, enabling scalable adoption across regions and education boards.

How we Built and Scaled the Platform

Core Platform Capabilities

A structured learning hierarchy mapped to assessments, certifications, and reporting ensures measurable outcomes. Multi format content (video, podcast, reads) and WordPress based publishing enable scalable content expansion without engineering dependency.

Offline First Engineering

Courses are packaged as SCORM modules for full offline consumption. All progress and assessments are stored locally and automatically synced upon reconnection, ensuring uninterrupted learning in low connectivity environments.

Architecture & Scalability

Built on a deeply customized Open edX foundation with mobile first architecture, custom data models, backend certification logic, and cloud native hosting ensuring high concurrency, reliability, and long term maintainability.

Structured mapping supports scalable content growth.

Engineering Challenges & Complexity

From a development standpoint, TheTeacherApp was a large-scale build that went far beyond a standard Open edX setup. The platform was heavily customized across UI/UX, database structure, and backend workflows to support a mobile-first and offline-first experience tailored for educators. The biggest technical challenge was enabling offline learning through SCORM while ensuring that all progress synced accurately once users came back online. Managing multiple SCORM versions required custom synchronization logic to prevent data loss and maintain consistent learner records. The result is a scalable and maintainable platform, thoughtfully engineered to support nationwide adoption and long-term growth.

Conclusion

TheTeacherApp stands as a large-scale, long-term EdTech infrastructure project, not just a learning application. By combining deep platform customization, offline-first innovation, and a teacher-centric design philosophy, the platform successfully addresses real-world constraints faced by educators across India.  This project demonstrates how thoughtfully engineered technology. when paired with a clear educational vision can drive meaningful, inclusive impact at national scale. It also reinforces ManpraX’s capability to deliver complex, mission-critical EdTech platforms designed for longevity, scalability, and real-world adoption.
